You Can't Get There From Here

Ahoy Muggles!

Busy weekend here in Boston with Father's Day, Juneteenth, and U.S. Open golf. My wife and I went to the tournament on Friday, and we had to travel by car, subway, and shuttle bus to go less than 20 miles. While getting around in Boston is always a challenge, it's not the only place that's difficult to navigate, and therein lies the inspiration for today's puzzle. Now you'll need to be very patient while solving this one, so please keep your "row rage" in check. :D I promise that if you follow all of the accessible routes you will avoid "gridlock" and happily reach your destination.

I'd like to thank @Abide, @Al Sisti, @whimsy, @MarkWoychick, @boharr, and @Joe Ross for pretesting and technical help, and a special thanks to @MaineMarge for providing the inspiration for the title.

The meta answer is a U.S. town that may be difficult to get to.

I think I'm off the couch, assuming I didn't get lost on my way!

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

How did Rick manage to hack into my laptop and read my travel diaries?

A couple of years ago when my crossword vocabulary had not been enriched, I wouldn't have been able to solve this. Or maybe I would have solved it, but I wouldn't have laughed when I got the answer.

Off the couch... felt like a search for Carmen Sandiego! Totally V.I.L.E. (so I loved it, of course!)

If I need an inspiration, Philomath is where I'd go.

(I waited until I solved the meta, just in case Cap'n Rick is an REM fan...)

I haven't been to Philomath, but it looks like a cool place to visit.

And I love REM - particulary "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"! Thanks for the video!
