I listen to the waves slapping against the hull of the speedboat. Behind me the great ship recedes into the distance. Ahead of me lies the warmth and comfort of those that have made the trip before me. I close my eyes and feel the sun play across my face, rolling with the boat as it makes its way ... ashore.

I am uncertainly on shore. I had an idea on the plane, but wasn't very confident in the phrase. I've talked myself into liking it--not sure if the confidence is from my meta sense or from the nightcap my son-in-law created (something with butterscotch schnapps and Baileys).

Have long assumed that to be the origin of the phrase "shaggy dog tale". It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled. The light-, oh, never mind. A knight is on his way to battle when his steed up and dies underneath him. The knight trudges on in the dark, wet, and cold, and is finally releived to see a farmhouse ahead with a light on. A young girl answers the door.

The dog is old, mangy, and hardly looks fit for riding. The knight looks at the girl and says, "Surely, you wouldn't send a knight out on a dog like this?"

I turned 3 in ‘87
Not old enough to remember Burma Shave, and I only moved to the US in 2014 in any case, but I remember reading about the Burma Shave roadside advertising in a couple Bill Bryson’s books - “Lost Continent” and “Made in America” IIRC. R.I.P.

For those who aren't old, but would like to enjoy some of this roadside verse that used to adorn Rte 66.

Ashore! It was a quick swim with my new knee feeling great. This meta was great fun for me and the solution came as I was driving to physical therapy and pondering the grid in my head. After 2 consecutive weeks of nudgeless solves, hopefully I'll be considered a fully fledged muggle!
