I listen to the waves slapping against the hull of the speedboat. Behind me the great ship recedes into the distance. Ahead of me lies the warmth and comfort of those that have made the trip before me. I close my eyes and feel the sun play across my face, rolling with the boat as it makes its way ... ashore.

You think the *dentist* likes being there??!! :-)

If you were 17 in 1987, I'm wondering where you saw those Burma Shave signs. . .
17 in 1987??? My son was 17 in 1987. LOL
I was 19 in '87. Am I in the wrong forum?
My daughter and fellow muggle, Regfish7, was only 1 in 1987 ! So muggles come in all ages!!

I am uncertainly on shore. I had an idea on the plane, but wasn't very confident in the phrase. I've talked myself into liking it--not sure if the confidence is from my meta sense or from the nightcap my son-in-law created (something with butterscotch schnapps and Baileys).

Hoping to get to the puzzle tomorrow! Busiest time of year for me, plus was sick for a bit. But raring to go now.

With apologies in advance. . .

It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled. The light-, oh, never mind. A knight is on his way to battle when his steed up and dies underneath him. The knight trudges on in the dark, wet, and cold, and is finally releived to see a farmhouse ahead with a light on. A young girl answers the door.

"I must have a horse!" cries the knight. "I need to get to the battle!"

"But we have no horses. My father and brothers have left for the battle themselves!"

"Oh dear, what shall I do? I am one of the bravest knights in the land! They need me at the battle!"

"One moment." After a time, she returns with a large Great Dane. "His name is Duke. My brothers ride him sometimes."

The dog is old, mangy, and hardly looks fit for riding. The knight looks at the girl and says, "Surely, you wouldn't send a knight out on a dog like this?"
Have long assumed that to be the origin of the phrase "shaggy dog tale". But, also always brings to mind the one about the pages doing the walking through the - oh, never mind.

I turned 3 in ‘87 :) Not old enough to remember Burma Shave, and I only moved to the US in 2014 in any case, but I remember reading about the Burma Shave roadside advertising in a couple Bill Bryson’s books - “Lost Continent” and “Made in America” IIRC. R.I.P. :(

The Verse By The Side of the Road

For those who aren't old, but would like to enjoy some of this roadside verse that used to adorn Rte 66.

(For those who do remember, I suspect you will mentally add "Burma Shave" as the final sign not included in these 90 smiles.)

90 Brilliant Burma Shave Signs

My dad liked quoting them. As a golfer, his favorite was:
"If fewer strokes
Is what you crave
Get out of the rough
With Burma Shave"

Though it breaks the rule of having "Burma Shave being the last sign after the poem.
I think my favorite was something like:
Please don't pass
On a curve or hill
If the cops don't get you
Morticians will
Burma shave

Now granted we also made up some of our own but they are hardly appropriate for this forum.

HEY, wait just one darn minute...if there are bad jokes and puns on this forum I need to be involved!!!
Critter sizing.jpg
Oh and while we are on the subject of critter sizes I remember an Irish friend telling me about the man who bought the new breed of dog called a Rary. It was friendly enough, and could even be taught to mimic human voice but it was HUGE. So huge in fact that the fellow decided he had to get rid of the dog. He tried all of the usual things to no avail and finally he called on a friend with a dump truck to haul the immense beast off somewhere and dump him. After hours of searching the truck driver finally found a cliff edge he could back the truck up to and finish his dirty deed. However, as the bed was going up, the dog looked down over the side of the cliff and used his talent of speaking to say:
"It's a long way to tip a Rary"

Aha! Just the nudge I needed for that evasive "Aha!" I hear that it's best not to even do shallow shore dives whilst drinking, so I shall hold off on the Miller Lites (with plastic "squeeze" lime. But, it *is* Friday. . .
Guess I could study up on how to do this thing from the FAQ, but I'm pretty scared of that kind of stuff - "To display the image use the BBCode [img] tag"

That shore dive thing worked out OK.

Nice pictures but some looked pretty fishy to me.

On shore. The Snoopy cartoons have me hankering for a Dark And Stormy, but the puzzle has me in the mood for the "Meta IPA" from Les Brasseurs du Jeudi in Montreal

Ashore! It was a quick swim with my new knee feeling great. This meta was great fun for me and the solution came as I was driving to physical therapy and pondering the grid in my head. After 2 consecutive weeks of nudgeless solves, hopefully I'll be considered a fully fledged muggle!
Don & Cynthia

We are always happy to get to know other muggles and help in any way! PM's are always welcome. The next best thing to winning a mug is helping a fellow muggle win a mug!
