I am confused, how do you get ACHING from your description?rjy wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 12:20 am I missed the specific metanism, thinking we were to add the state abbreviation to the first word and anagram to get the state name. Works for all of them, tho the anagramming is trivial is some cases. But that pattern led to ACHING, that you could add MI and anagram to get MICHIGAN.
I didn’t submit, since I was subsequently nudged to the correct answer, but seems this should be a completely legitimate answer as well.
Anyhoo… on to the next one!

Bothered me that KANSAS was a state.
In car as a passenger with a phone is not a time for deep testing so I briefly thought kAnSasTeRitOry at ASTRO and EgonspAnGLEr at EAGLE while AcTONE ate ATONE. Figured it couldn't be right as it wasn't mechanically well constructed enough and when I got home and verified there absolutely wasn't any option for the other three (and eGOspAngLer also] ate GOAL) so it absolutely couldn't work.
Didn't notice until two minutes ago the characters name was Spengler. (Never heard of the casino so....)

GUAVA is not an anagram of VAGUE

Memory served me well on this puzzle. When I saw the title, I immediately recalled the title of a Gaffney puzzle a few years back, "Please state your full name" so I concluded the meta involved states.
It was only after I found all five that I realized the significance of the missing ST in the title. In reviewing the 6-letter answers, "Ah I see" stood out immediately because of the similarity to 16A. This was a very satisfying solution for me, and a very elegant Meta, in my opinion. Not perfect maybe, but satisfying and fun.

Good luck to all for a successful solve. If you see that I'm ashore - rare occasion of late - message me if you'd like a nudge. Be sure to include your progress so I can know better how to assist.

Add the state abbreviation of MI to ACHING (5D answer). Gives you MIACHING, which anagrams to MICHIGAN.Jace54 wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 12:43 amI am confused, how do you get ACHING from your description?rjy wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 12:20 am I missed the specific metanism, thinking we were to add the state abbreviation to the first word and anagram to get the state name. I had the five States in the meta and then came up with Maine and Michigan.

I was stuck in an absurd rabbit hole all weekend. I thought “ate your name!” sounded like something Animal from The Muppets would say, and I couldn’t get over “EWORKPERMIT” having “Kermit” in it, separated by the letter P. I kept searching for other Muppets, but they never appeared. Luckily a Hail Mary guess this week yielded a 10% chance of success, and my guess was correct!

Yeah the six instances of ST in the grid doomed me. Never able to crawl out of that one.MMac wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 12:15 am It bothered me that in all but one of the cases, the missing two letters were part of another three-letter answer (ORR, NUT, RNA, YEN, NOI).
It further bothered me that “ST” (as in missing from **ATE) appears six times in the puzzle.

Wasn't sure our admins would let me get away with this, so I tested it on The Smarter Half first. She missed it, so I finally got one up on her.femullen wrote: Fri May 31, 2024 2:08 pm Ahoy, dear Isaac!

I think you should have submitted. ACHING may not be the “right” answer, but I agree that it’s legitimate.rjy wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 12:20 am I missed the specific metanism, thinking we were to add the state abbreviation to the first word and anagram to get the state name. I counted 10 six-letter words, but you’re right that there were 12, so I was even luckier!chart wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 7:07 am8.33% chance, right?zach wrote: Mon Jun 03, 2024 4:38 am I was stuck in an absurd rabbit hole all weekend. Got the meta but convinved myself that the last across clue (with 411) which is often relevant to Gaffney was what allowed the inclusion of iOWa and nEWyOrk. Since we added the fourth and first letters. Didn't get the state abbreviation part.

Dang, we submitted MAIDEN, which I can defend, but we overlooked a few details that would (probably?) have led us to the answer that is more consistent with the title, like adding AR to Kansas…..duh.

I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

I got stuck on “stew”, something ate, being a homophone of Stu, a name, and the answer being in a location that is usually a hint. Couldn’t get out of that rabbit hole and eventually needed a hint.
Always happy to provide a nudge if I’m ashore.

As Relic posted, the (St)Ate your name past meta jumped at me quickly, especially after seeing (OR)Egon. And coincidentally enough, the clue for Wed crossword was "Name Dropping". That made for a quick June swim.
