The One That Got Away

Ahoy Muggles!

I'm extremely excited to be back on MMM, and that's no exaggeration! And speaking of exaggerating, I do a good amount of fishing in and around Boston Harbor, and I can attest to the fact that many anglers (myself included :D) tend to stretch the truth when describing their fishing experiences - particularly when it comes to "the one that got away". Those fish seem to grow another inch and/or pound every time the stories are retold. Well, this meta also involves one that got away, and I hope you'll have an impressive tale to tell after you've landed it.

I'd like to thank @Abide, @Al Sisti, @Whimsy, @boharr, and @Joe Ross for their pretesting and technical help.

The meta answer is a 7-letter word.

"The One that Got Away" - Crosshare (NOTE: If you enjoy solving on Crosshare, help keep the site running by donating a few bucks).

"The One That Got Away" - PUZ

"The One That Got Away" - PDF

"The One That Got Away" - Spreadsheet

Image

Difficulty - On a scale of 1 to 5, I'd have to rate this one a 7. Oops, there I go again! It's more like a level 3 or "A Bit Choppy".

Reveal is here.

Good luck!

PS - Mrs. Cap'n (aka "The Admiral") and I are currently in 28-Down (Hi @MaineMarge!) doing some holiday shopping and searching for our Christmas tree. I may be a little slow in responding to PMs, but please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like some 46-Across.

Just finished the grid. Not off the couch, yet; just stopped in to say that I love the clue for 35A.

Well Cap you have me splashing around. I've already found at least three very deep fishing holes that seem likely but does not lead to an answer.

Off the couch and headed to the nearest fishing hole. Great puzzle Cap'n!

Favorite clues: 47D 35A and 58A
If I’ve solved and you need a nudge, you can PM me. Happy to pay it forward. ;)

Now if I had written this puzzle, I'd see some things I had in mind but flawed the execution. But you.... never.

I think I have 4 out of seven but just can't keep going.....

EDIT: There was a going to keep and I kept it. Got 5 and made my guess and then.... head hard issue back solving.... and then dope slap.

This puzzle really works and is very tight and fits.... well, one *mild* complaint but really, it really is there. Sometimes it doesn't feel like a puzzle is there or you finish and you get a "yeah, but..." This one is *REALLY* there.

Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

What a doofus I am! Knew what it was going ot be almost from the moment I saw it and still managed to befuddle myself with cul-de-sacs and Burnakian mechanisms (they are like Machiavellian but not as unscrupulous or cunning).

Finally managed to leave the couch with some help for a friendly boat captain.

Off the couch. Tricky one!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Off the couch!

After, ahem, floundering on this one for quite some time, and distracting myself with other amusements, I returned to it 20 or so minutes ago, and somehow it all came together quickly. Love when that happens.

Fun puzzle, Cap’n!
