Welcome to...
benchen71's Metas on a Tuesday (MOAT)
Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? Aussie Steve Bradbury was the the first man to cross the line following a pile-up in the 1,000m short-track speed skating final at the Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002. He'd been in last place for most of the race. But when the other four crashed on the very last turn he managed to avoid them all, thus securing a famous victory, and Australia's first Winter Olympics gold medal ever. Can you do the same with this crossword? The answer to the meta is a seven word phrase suggested by the grid.
PM me with your submissions or submit on Crosshare. Either way, I'll compile a list of those who successfully solve the meta.

Fun one. Backsolved as I knew what the phrase was. Took me a minute to make it work. Confirmed on Crosshare.

The moat is a distant memory!
Ditto some of the above. I back-solved too. Fun!

Stormed! I love the story and GIF of Steve Bradbury. The only reason he didn't get caught up in the pile up is that he was so far behind the rest!

Skated across!
Like others, had an inkling of the answer that was then very fun to puzzle out -- a series of ahas, including a bonus one for me when I figured out exactly what an entry meant!
Nice work, Ben -- thanks!

Storming the castle! Is back-solving another way of coming from behind?
I could not figure out how to get across the moat even though I could surmise the answer so I went fishing. Fortunately there was not much action on the lake so I had time to ponder this meta. I remembered enough of it to figure out what to do.
Fun.

Upon first reading this, I thought you were speaking
metaphorically!

Thanks for the puzzle!
I never had a chance to try 26D, but a former co-worker used to rave about them, lament their unavailability in our area, and go to great lengths to obtain them.

Snuck in the back castle door like most of the crowd. Justifying the answer afterwards was fun
