This required some rethinking and the grid.... So much googling!

Makes me think my distance solving partner and I have not hit pay dirt. Er, sand.
May as well put me at the bar, Bob. Which is usually where I stay.

After some burrowing into rabbit holes, I have a very good and defendable answer.
On shore.
I don’t want a defensible answer.
I want a lock.

Ashore, though with just enough uneasiness to hold off submitting. One little thing is still bugging me.

Ashore I think. Keeping my life jacket on. I’m sure my daughter will prove me wrong. She can buy her own wine!

Who drinks Scotch on a beach? I do, that's who.
I am on shore and looking forward to opening a new bottle of Talisker Storm tonight.

Toughest grid in ages but I'm on shore!
Indeed! Grid was hard, solving the meta? Not at all!

Count me on shore, Bob.
These puzzzles seem to be a lot more difficult to solve lately.
I average one right answer a MONTH!
No WSJ mug yet, but my friend brought me a NYC Ballet mug (she knows how long I've been trying for the elusive WSJ one) which I treasure even more.

Pretty sure we have it, but not solidly confident. Thought there would be something to absolutely verify our answer after the blatant hint given last week!
Think we will sit on our solution for today and see if it becomes more solid for us.
I also looked for a little validation. Only found one convoluted, probably unintentional aspect to the puzzle. Curious to see if anyone did too.
If it is the same queasiness I had, there is validation in there. I stumbled upon it when I woke up this morning.

That would've been quite a taxing swim to shore on my own, but the lovely Zoom crew lit a nice beacon so I can now join them on shore. Tough one but a satisfying way to start the weekend. Cheers, all!
