I can see that @boharr and I are using OCTAL and SIREN as the first two rows. See Post #5. Those ten letters are the ten most frequent letters.

A contributor to the recent WSJ article liked "arose."

I usually start with RATES and MOUND. Gives me nearly all the vowels and several common consonants.

On the Wikipedia Letter frequency page, sort the Dictionaries column in the table in descending order.

Notice that the five most frequent letters - fittingly in reverse-order - are R A I S E. This might be a great initial word, since it contains the three most frequently used vowels: A, E, & I. (You can also use A R I S E, if you prefer the letter positioning.)

Then select from the next following letters, which are appropriate in lieu of first word results: N T O C D & U.

I like to mix it up a little -- but often, of course, I go for two words containing mainly common letters to begin also. But not exclusively. Because it's probably not going to end up being a word that contains only very common letters and we're going to have to come up with the outliers at some point.
I like to have fun -- maybe get a little theme going --
FLOUR and YEAST made a decent start for me once.

Tried for the first time today after seeing mrmd's note and link in the WSJ topic Thanks, mrmd!

Beginners luck, got it in 5. Fun and well designed. I'm hooked. Let's see, spelling bee, then vertex, then wordle? Or spelling bee, wordle, and then vertex?

I found out about Wordle yesterday and have done over 150 at this archive site: https://www.devangthakkar.com/wordle_archive/

I started out using boring word pairs like STERN/AUDIO or HEART/LIONS, but I find it a lot more fun to try words with less common letters such as CHIMP, BUDGE, GUIDE, BIRCH, FORTY... I'll occasionally start with QUOTA or VIXEN for even more fun. Sometimes I get lucky and hit on an unusual letter pattern -- GUIDE leads pretty easily to the answer JUICY -- and if I strike out on the first two words, I can try something basic like STONE and have not too many weird letters remaining.

Or I might have a first step like this.
