"Not a Creature Was Stirring..." and neither am I. I am firmly stuck on the couch. I have found at least one possible mechanism for every starred clue, but nothing seems to work to solve the meta. I am getting pretty far afield chasing down these pesky rabbits. Time for a break. Based on the responses here I must be over complicating things.

Oh, that had a tough little twist but I haven't felt this much satisfaction in solving a meta in a loooong time.

Really clever! And really tricky!
GUAVA is not an anagram of VAGUE and PEPPER is not a palindrome.
