ON THE SHORE! Thanks for a quick one, Matt! Now I can get back to my holiday baking. And the timing was perfect: finished the meta while on my second cup of coffee. Now I can get my hubby's favorite Christmas cookies made, cooled and stored away before he gets home from playing golf. I usually have to hide them from him, or they are all eaten long before Christmas arrives. When other family members arrive for Christmas dinner, they always wonder why there are none of this kind on the cookie platter. Or maybe they just ask about them so they can see the grin on his face!

I'll bet you do because I did and it took me forever to find the "problem" (which of course turned out to be me). If you wish, PM me for guidance on the last two. It's not a nudge because I KNOW you have the right word, it is unmistakable, but I also know well the OCD voice that says, "but you didn't finish!!!"pjc wrote: Fri Dec 17, 2021 8:19 am Still on the boat. I have 7 of the 9 letters and have an AWESOME 9-letter word derived from those that fits perfectly with the theme - but I'll be dipped if I can figure out the backsolve to get those pesky last two letters. Maybe I have a grid error?
Anyway, if I don't get those two letters by Sunday, I'll submit the word because it feels so RIGHT!
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges IF ASKED; metas should be about fun, not frustration. PM me what you have done so far, because often you are closer than you think, and I will try to help you move along.

Ashore! I was out hiking yesterday afternoon, got caught talking to a fellow hiker for about an hour, stopped to eat at an incredibly busy Panda Express, and got caught in a huge traffic jam on the way home, so I didn’t get around to considering the meta until this morning. (It was worth the wait, though …

Done!
While not even finishing the main dining course I was running to the boats, with only a passing nod to Isaac letting him know I wouldn't be joining him. Rowed steadily on until suddenly my compass quit, and I didn't know where I needed to go. So I fell asleep in the boat (athwart the gunnels as it were) and woke up at 2am with a clear knowledge of where the shore was. Only needed the stars to help fill in the missing pieces. Easy row to then join the remnants of the earlier shore revelers....
Normally I cringe when I see a Gaffney puzzle; this time I'm saying "Thank you Matt, for a very fun construction that helped me feel I *can* do these things!"
Need to stock up on Green Chartreuse, so maybe will opt for a Last Word tomorrow. Safe weekend to all.

Do you have some sort of death wish, or you just have a bunch of rusty boat parts that need cleaning, or what? That stuff is nasty (IMHO).
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

Was gunning for the first page. 20 minutes in I had 90% of it. But my technique was slightly off, causing an error, which I couldn't get past until last night.
Barkeep, is there any Guinness lef...... Yeah, didn't think so.

America's Test Kitchen has a podcast called "Proof". Last season they had a fascinating episode on chartreuse--The Drink That Wouldn't Die. How it survived mudslides and revolutions and such.Henry Paul wrote: Fri Dec 17, 2021 11:55 am Done!

Not quite like Fernet Branca which I always have to watch because (I think) it doesn't play nicely with others...

On shore! Feels great to have solved and submitted this morning, leaving time for completion of that gingerbread house....
Cheers to all!
It will be a steaming mug of hot coffee for me today.

Done and done
If I'm around, I am willing to join the Muggle Zoom room at other times to lend a hand to those in need.

Count me ashore. Found several ways NOT to solve this one along the way. Great puzzle!
