So I'm on shore, but far from sure it's the right one.

Ashore, has the basic mechanism but needed some assistance, very clever!

Ashore. A new look today brought the mechanism and in short order the answer.

Ashore! Lisa and I will have a couple of Old Chaimers, which is a chai-infused bourbon cocktail we had last night at a new cocktail bar in our little downtown, which was delicious. Cheers y’all!

Finally made it to shore! Didn't get there without a confirmation that I had landed in the correct place and even then, I missed a part of the solve. Was able to derive the final answer anyway, luckily. Many thanks to my confirmation buddy! Please, if the cabana boy hasn't gone home for the evening, could I have a Hibiscus Margarita (and add one of those little umbrellas, por favor).
Channeling Molly Weasley on a good day.

Got it and enjoyed it. Unbelievable construction, as is often true.

Sadly, I think our streak is broken. We are at sea. If anyone would like to PM us a nudge, we'd appreciate it. We did realize something about the puzzle, but never went anywhere from there.

My wife came up with the answer...we're not sure of the mechanism. It's possible we're on the wrong beach... Hey, where is everybody?

Well, I submitted something. I'm far from confident in it, but I'm too tired at this point to think anymore.

I have a nit to pick about the contest rules, but I don't know whom to contact, so I'll just leave my rant here.
"Midnight" should never be used as a deadline because it is ambiguous. If you're ever in a position of giving a deadline, use one minute before or after midnight instead, to make it clear which day you're talking about.

Which midnight is this referring to?by midnight New York City time on the Sunday
- the midnight that is one minute after 2359 / 11:59PM on Saturday night and one minute before 0001 / 12:01AM on Sunday morning
- the midnight that is one minute after 2359 / 11:59PM on Sunday night and one minute before 0001 / 12:01AM on Monday morning
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

I got the right answer, but man did I spend way too much time looking for the mythical LIFORNIA plus an I.

So, after one gets the names of the states, where is the clue/hint that tells the solver to look for answers in the grid with the remaining letters of the state names? Is it that there is no such hint/clue and is something one just notices by staring at the grid?

There is no explicit clue. The title gives you guidance in a meta - sometimes very crypticKRM wrote: Mon May 24, 2021 12:07 am So, after one gets the names of the states, where is the clue/hint that tells the solver to look for answers in the grid with the remaining letters of the state names?
