Do lions get released from bags like other cats? If so, mine is loose and exploring the perimeter.

The feline is out of the tote. This was a wonderfully constructed puzzle!

The kitty has departed the sack!
Loved it! One of Josh’s best yet. Dare I say ... Gaffney-esque?
I needed a nudge, but I feel OK about it, because it was mainly to steer me away from a distraction, and keep me on something that might be productive.

Lion is on the loose. My first ever first day solo solve for a MEOW!
Great puzzle. I had to work for it.

Whew - may have finally found the first step.....moving along (on little cat feet hopefully!)
Got it, but with the caveat that I had the final letter in the author's name derived incorrectly. Cat's out of the bag, but bag still clinging to its last paw perhaps?

The lion is on the prowl, although I'd like to have the 30 minutes I spent looking for more than a surname back, please. jk
Btw I did actually find something, but it's highly unlikely Josh would have picked it...
Nice puzzle!

Finally - I know the answer.
I won't claim much credit for solving as I did get additional nudges from Josh to get there.
Was stuck in one rabbit hole doing the right thing to the wrong things. Needed help to get focused on doing the right thing to the right thing.

Thanks to broadmindedness on the part of the judges, a large cat has escaped the bag and is roaming the greater Houston area.

That cat has been surrendered and is headed to a sanctuary.

The lion sleeps tonight outside the cage but I can hardly take credit for it. Josh had to give a major shove towards the mechanism. I interpreted it wrong all along, even when I looked at the online nudge(s). I can truthfully say that I never would have solved it had I not gotten extra help.
Clever puzzle, with some misdirection for those of us who solve these a lot and get used to a "style". Just goes to show you should not do that, and also shows what a clever lad our Josh is.

NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

Solution:
As suggested by 37A, the key was to "spin" the word TALES multiple times, and find corresponding entries in the grid:
TEALS -> BLUEGREENS
SLATE -> ROCK
STALE ->OLD
STEAL -> NICK
LEAST -> TINIEST
TESLA -> EV
The first letters of these corresponding entries spell BRONTE ... which I was embarrassed to discover is actually the name of a whole family of distinguished authors rather than a single one, so sorry if that threw anybody off.
