Mr. Gaffney’s “Put A Little Spin on the Ball” was one of those “perfect storm” puzzles, providing four clear anchor entries with just enough specific information to get some of you Muggles in serious trouble.

Each of those long entries contained the same four adjacent letters – A, E, D and N – in differing order. The idea was to give them a “little spin” and arrive at the name DEAN. Specifically, Dizzy Dean.

Of course, you could also make those letters spell EDNA, as in Edna Scheer (See woozy’s Posts #231 and #254). She was a pitcher who played for the Rockford Peaches in the All-American Girls Baseball League. That’s the same team featured in the movie “A League of Their Own.” Edna was right-handed (a pity) but is part of the “Women in Baseball” exhibit in Cooperstown. An honorable mention, certainly.

Your Rabbit also appreciates the effort from chocoholic (Post #256), but it was a bit too rambling in what was clearly a very competitive week. So now we come to a pair of nominees:

rsz_50pctnominee.jpg

krf (Post #238) found the “Sultan of SWAT” in 5A, wore the number THREE in 41A, pitched LEFT-HANDED in 17A, was tossed out from what became a no-hit game at 25A, and (after removing a few interior letters) was validated by 42A: THE BABE. Lovely!

And we have altosax who took those same four entries and found Sandy Koufax in them (Post #243). He ticked the same boxes: left-handed, four no-hitters, a record-setting attendance for pitching a World Series game, and (yes, it’s a bit of a stretch) played for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats at age 18.

So there you have it. Your Rabbit thinks he will make himself comfortable in the burrow and listen to some Dizzy Gillespie records. Maybe Mr. Gaffney will start working on a Gillespie anagram for a future puzzle. Until next, week, then.

Fell into a bad rabbit hole.

Four long answers. Must be four letters, right?

Hall of Fame
Left Handed
No-hitter:

Sandy Koufax
Warren Spahn
Lefty Grove
Randy Johnson

None with only four letters.

Being a Yankee fan wanted to submit (Whitey) Ford, but never threw a no-hitter.

Lets try words in a circle (um, spin?) NOPE!

Gave up

Koufax is a fraternity brother of mine, different era, different chapter.

SANDY KOUFAX
As suggested by the title, the clue, 17A and 25A, the answer is a left-handed, spinning pitcher who has tossed no hitters and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bear in mind this is from someone who knows very little about baseball, but is ok at Googling… albeit somewhat skeptical at some of the “AI” answers on this topic!
That was my first thought. Left handed pitcher, fast spin on the ball, four no hitters, National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Bad News Bears team played in the Los Angeles area (San Fernando Valley) and movie was filmed mainly in that area, too.

I had to be driven to the right beach in one of those golf carts with the giant baseball on it...

I was distracted by the central grid entry with the clue "Keeping the show rolling smoothly". There didn't seem to be a need for the '"rolling" except to link it to the title words "spin" and "ball". And then MCING vs EMCEEING suggests wordplay with the letters M and C, but nothing that would work with the themers.

A bunch of grid answers - Padre, Near (above no-hitter), Greg, Bears, and Attendance) led me down this rabbit hole. I learned a lot about Greg Maddux. :)
I hate to be the Bear of Bad News but Greg Maddux is very much right handed. Perhaps confused with his longtime teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Tom Glavine? A crafty lefty if there ever was one.

I worked the puzzle on my iPad, sat poolside in Cabo, cheap rum infused piñacolada, in arm’s reach. Worked through the grid rather quickly but wasn’t able to give proper focus. Odd, I know.

So I was content to enjoy the boat, and listen to the waves, and spend the weekend enjoying the sublime meeting of desert and sea. Next week we shall return to meta focus. Speaking of time on the boat…

I was struck by the three team names in the clues: Giants, Card(inals), and Reds. So I googled what HoF pitcher pitched for all three of these teams? The AI answer: Bob Gibson! Baseball aficionados will immediately recognize this as an AI hallucination since Gibson was with the Cardinals his entire career.

I never did find my way to the beach, alas.

Too late for Rabbit consideration, but still. . .

Randy Johnson is a left-hander who is in the Hall of Fame, has tossed no-hitters, inlcuding a perfect game. In retirement he did baseball-themed ads where he was the coach of a not-very-good youth team.

"The whole premise was they weren't unfortunately a very good team, basically like 'The Bad News Bears' of the '70s and I'm playing Walter Matthau, if you will," Johnson said. (Quoted here.)

In addition, his 4,000th strikeout came against the Padres (15 Across).

I don't know much about attendance, but presumably the numbers were higher when he was the starter. In any case, three out of four ain't bad.

Dizzy Dean was not a lefthander, nor did he ever toss a no-hitter. I'm cranky.

Way to go again, Joe! Can we mugless muggles get a shot now? ;)
MikeMillerwsj wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 4:32 pm The contest answer is DIZZY DEAN. The letters D-E-A-N can be found in a random order (i.e., “dizzy”) in each of the four theme answers, suggesting the contest answer.

The answer to this one was hiding in plain sight, but a lot of solvers missed it. We had 1,075 entries, with just 58% correct, below our usual rate of about 75%. Meanwhile, left-handers who threw no-hitters drew big votes, starting with Sandy Koufax (120), plus Warren Spahn (54), Babe Ruth (41), Randy Johnson (31), Jim Abbott (15), plus righties Nolan Ryan (12) and Greg Maddux (8).

And speaking of Hall of Famers, our random draw this week selected a winner who also won just six months ago. Congrats to Joe Speyer of Washington DC!
