Haha! Not really a secret, but more of a family tradition based on how my father used to make them. We use this little rhyme: “Three and two and cherry juice” for 3 parts bourbon, two parts sweet vermouth, and a little cherry juice. Makes a sweeter Manhattan than traditional recipes. I also like to add bitters.

Yes, if using Luxardo cherries (and what other kind would anyone use?), my wife and I like putting a tiny bit of the juice in, especially when the weather's cold, like now. Learned that from the bartender at a ski resort in frigid Maine when I got a little frost bite in the -65 below wind chill on a New Year's Day. And bitters are de rigueur!Steve M wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 2:57 pmHaha! Not really a secret, but more of a family tradition based on how my father used to make them. To really kick it up a notch, try using Carpano Antica as the vermouth.

Very late start due to travel. Needed one nudge to continue focusing on the thing I'd been focusing on, and then another to point out a grid entry error that was rather unfortunate.

But safely onshore now.

Drink up -- it's 9 AM somewhere.Yoda66 wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 2:12 pm Ashore after late start. Very Gaffney-like, as some other posters stated. Probably a gin-tonic but not at 2 pm
If I have solved the Puzzle, feel free to ask for a nudge. Always willing to pay it forward.

I would be interested to know how solvers contrast the styles of Gaffney and Shenk. That knowledge could be helpful to us newbies.
Thanks in advance!

Did the grid on Thursday but did not get the meta. Looked again on Friday and again no luck. Then on Saturday while doing something else an idea of something to try hit me. On the beach!!! I now have a perfect record for 2025.

Same, but with dashes of chocolate bitters and cherry bitters. Happy New Year, Muggles all!
Mr. G is completely exhausted, but he has dragged me ashore.
Moderation is one of my New Year's resolutions, so put a drop of water in the Scotch.

@Brian K My observation is that to solve a Gaffney meta you have to bring additional knowledge. To contrast in Shenk's construction the information is all in front of you. Obscure maybe but there. However this week you have to have or obtain the additional knowledge about the six themers which is why there are comments about it being more Gaffneyesque vs Shenkian. But like in all metas and creators, there are exceptions to every rule. The only rule that is constant is that there are no rules.Brian K wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 8:44 pm I would be interested to know how solvers contrast the styles of Gaffney and Shenk.
