MEOW #210 Do I Hear Water

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

You know how the say they didn't see something at first but then in the morning there it was? Doesn't that just honk you off.

Cat firmly entrenched in bag and making sickly noises.
Same - thought I'd have a MEOW-eve solve, but nope! Have Step 0, still looking for the next...

But! I needed to hop in anyway to just to comment on the cluing - there are at least 20 where an obvious clue would have been an easy grab for the construction, and DrT took a left turn or a right turn, added a pun or deceptive indirection. Always a treat!
Thank you Ray. As you well know (Ray is a frequent tester of my most "Tomish" puzzles) I do love a turn of phrase. I don't do it as well as Evan Birnholz (few do) but I like to give people their money's worth in a solve.

Well probably because he is all orange...Doritos and Cheetos have the same side-effect.

Thanks for solving.

The advantage of my own forgetfulness is that when there is not a META for the day I can go back and resolve an old one and it will be like a brand new experience. The disadvantage is that I am still looking for that darn Easter egg I hid.....

Ahh, needed the slightest nudge to debag the feline. Can finally untwist my brain, but enjoyed the challenge! Thanks DrT

Hmm.. think I've stumbled on it by accident. Got an idea an it worked a little so I was able to guess. But when I tried to back solve it got further and further a field.

Yep. The only thing I know is the answer. Utterly and completely confused.

Cat is free, and disgusted by the sound of the dog’s slurpy water drinking. “Why can’t we all just soundlessly and primly lap our water, as I do?”
