MEOW #205 Bump in the Night

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

And with luck tomorrow will scamper across the moat, hopefully unharmed by ghouls and goblins.

Thanks Ben

Black cat has escaped. My bump in the night was a slap on the forehead.

Does anyone actually eat Black Crows? I thought they were just for throwing at other kids in the movie theater.

I always assumed that the theatre operators collected the discarded boxes of "DOTS", aggregated the uneaten (or lobbed) licorice DOTS and repackaged them as Black Crows. Interestingly my Mom LOVED Black Crows so mine were never wasted (though I now know another reason besides me for her high BP).

Black Crows??? (googles) Yep, apparently that's a thing. A thing some people eat, even.

Oh, you kids just don't know what good candy was (though Black Crows probably never counted).

We also had Jujubes which were tiny, VERY sticky candy. Many a kid lost a tooth to them because you chomped down, and when you pulled your jaw apart a lower tooth was sometimes stuck to the upper - or vice versa. Funny story; years later I was at my dentist and he was trying to get a crown off. He tried all of the scientific methods and finally resorted to something "new" a rep had brought in. He presented me with this small cherry-flavored chewy candy, told me to bite down hard with the crowned tooth and then pull my jaw apart. I almost broke out laughing, this "innovation" was for all intents and purposes a cherry Jujube. I had to Google the candy to show him and we both had a good laugh (and by the way, it got the crown off).

As I handed out (and of course sampled) candy this evening I was overcome with a feeling of sadness. The candy did just not taste like candy should. Maybe it is because my taste buds have changed or I have had the opportunity to have better chocolate as the years passed, but this candy tasted waxy and unremarkable. Even the Reese's PB cups were "meh". I guess today's kids don't know because they did not have the "good stuff" before wax replaced chocolate and artificial flavors were substituted, but I knew and I was sad.

I had the exact same feeling and... I think it is just this year. I really enjoyed my nostalgia burst in the past (or am I being nostalgic about how much better nostalgia was 5 years ago).

Actually. The trader joes peanut butter cups might be objectively much better than the reese's ones which lately have just seemed to have too much sugar and not enough flavor.

But last night I've actually been liking the Abba-zabba which *no-one* can possibly claim aren't as good as they remember and absolutely no-one remembers them as being good in the first place. (Although ... "underrated" would be an accurate assessment....)

I had never heard of Abba-Zabba bars or Big Hunks, and unfortunately the manufacturer is going out of business. But they sound good so I ordered a box of each on Amazon just to see if they are as good as they sound. Thanks for the tip woozy!

Well that's how it goes, got a tip on some good candy, solved the WSJCC but no more solvers for the MEOW, so I guess a wash for the day, or maybe a net plus because I always feel good when I manage to solve and the candy sounds delicious. I like classic candies that have not bent to the demands of pricing wars, of course I hope I don't like the new candy too much since it seems to be going away. Sigh.....

Maybe we're hoping that on one of your many trips back to this thread you'll drop us a tiny hint or three.
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.
