Late start (watching the swimming trials... )
We are on shore with y'all, and it feels weird to say so after so many weeks floundering. I'm guessing there will be more than 240 correct entries this week...
Had a Skull Wine red tonight.
For those in the northern hemisphere, happy summer solstice -- enjoy the longest day of the year. And for those in the NE, stay cool and safe!

On shore! Greetings from Denali National Park! Didn’t have time to look at it earlier, but probably my quickest solve yet? Solved before finishing the fill.
Alaskan ale please! When in Rome…

My earliest arrival on shore yet! But it seems like maybe it was on the cheesy side...
Will make sure to celebrate with an Irish coffee tonight. Godspeed to whomever is in Denali

One... bottles one's own wine???woozy wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 9:28 pm Scarily cheesy. I'm submitting although the fear I'm being lead down a garden path is really really high. But I figure if an answer is entirely justifiable ... well, it would do me any good, but I can pretend to not feel stupid when I don't get it. .... But... doesn't feel great. For one it doesn't really make too much sense.... it makes *some* sense so I can't rule out my answer but... phoo.
I'll have one of the 21 bottles of Pinot Noir I bottled today...
Wait... no I won't. I want to age those and it's way too hot. A gin and tonic. Simple drink for a simple meta.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

My wife says that the expression dates back to carriage (stagecoach?) days. If a bump in the road caused a woman’s full length dress to come up enough to reveal her ankle, a gentleman would be grateful for the glance and say “thank you ma’am.”femullen wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 9:48 pm"Thank you, ma'am" is what you say when the jalopy lurches over a big bump in the road and you've got your kidneys and fillings returned to their proper locations. Heard it a lot as a boy in dirt-road country. Don't know where it comes from. Just rural idiom, I guess.Aragorn wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 8:52 pmIf you Google it, apparently it is an expression, but one I’d never heard of beforeDaveG wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 8:41 pm As a side note, I can’t for the life of me understand 56A… obviously completed the grid but had to get that answer by completing the down clues to backtrack it in there.
What does this mean?

On shore after a quick swim. I guess I’ve been inspired by the Olympic trials :)

Well. "Cheesy" rather than [REDACTED] is a funny way of modification. It's funny because the actual answer does seem a little ... offish and cheesy.
I kind of thought of a rational how it would fit into a bigger picture more solidly but it's a little ... morbid?
The internet is all over the place about the origin of "thank you ma'am". One says its simple sarcasm. Another that it forces on two nod your head like a gentlemen giving a silent gesture. My thoughts (never having heard of it either) it reminds my of the crude phrase I heard a lot in the 70s/80s where we proceed it with two rhyming words. ... which would fit the jarring bumping wham bam nature of this one. Now I wonder if there is any connection between the two phrases. (Yuck)

I think this puzzle is TOO CHEESY, leading me to believe there's another step. Anyone agree?

On shore! Trying not to be too proud of myself for solving without any hints. Still feels good

Well... It's only kosher to add an extra step if the previous step is not actually complete. As this indeed yields a five-letter word through legitimate steps one can't be allowed to say "tricked you! You needed another steps" You can do that if the steps aren't complete or a weak puzzle mechanism but ... well, you can say an answer fails to be correct if it doesn't go all the way, but you can't say an answer succeeds in being wrong if it does go all of a way but just not the way the constructor intended.wjchatto wrote: Fri Jun 21, 2024 10:10 am I think this puzzle is TOO CHEESY, leading me to believe there's another step. Of course whether something "fits" are the steps are "complete" can be subjective.
I greatly dislike my answer but I really do feel it does all the steps and is complete and therefore, even if it isn't right, it can't be wrong.

What a difference a week makes! Twenty minutes after this puzzle dropped, page 1 was full. Page 3 was full a half-hour later. And as of mid-day Friday there are 170-some solvers enjoying the refreshing sea air. Meg's Cabana Boy and Isaac's crew are busy preparing for tonight's limbo party and pig roast!
