I'm very new to this wsj Friday thing, having just gotten ashore for the first time last week. Would love an invitation to the discord, as I'm staring at my grid now and lost! Thank you...

Well, I think I'm on shore... If I have a nit to pick, does that mean I'm on the wrong beach?
I'll probably ask for confirmation or slog through all the 6-letter entries again before I submit.
UPDATE: On the right shore now. I neglected something, and my new answer is much better. Thanks DrTom.

Well I was dragged out of the water by @lbray53 so I will not submit. A very tricky meta and I see why some people have nits to pick. The mechanism is solid just not perfectly consistent, but you cannot miss it when you finally have it.
I have managed to shed the albatross and will now seek out a quiet corner under a palm tree (certainly cannot get close to the beach) and see if I can catch the waiter's eye. "Excuse me sir, might I have a tall glass of 'Drown your Sorrows', I seem to have ingested a substantial amount of sea-water."
So, ashore and contrite.

NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges IF ASKED; metas should be about fun, not frustration. PM me what you have done so far, because often you are closer than you think, and I will try to help you move along.

Ashore. We were fighting a mean riptide all the way but finally made it to the beach.

Count me ashore! First thoughts were good ones and led to a fairly quick swim. This was no DUX CAT. A cold one will do as it is warming outside.

Lots of rabbit holes since I finished the grid on Thursday afternoon. Happily, after thinking on it for 48 hours, I finally got it! Phew!!

Spent the night with Isaac. May have to pop into the Last Call Zoom tomorrow for the first time in a long time...

Ashore....thanks to listening to the zoom call's first 15 minutes. Doesn't seem elegant to me, but (ahem) I've missed elegantness before.....

As with some others, I have an answer that is defendable, but not very elegant...so I will declare myself onshore.

Still on the ship. I have a few ideas but I doubt any of them are correct.
Update: might just stick with what I thought it might be the other day and it does work but I'm not sure so maybe I'm on shore and maybe I'm not. Probably won't submit the answer.

On terra firma. Used backwards process. Played a lot of tennis, drank pisco sours (and JWB) while watching Djokovic pulling the usual come back at French Open, and then filled grid / solved meta. I thought it was straightforward (and really the described nitpicking is akin an ant's toothpick).

Still sitting here with Isaac, mulling over the meta. Since it’s a good idea to concentrate on the title, I’m munching on a bag of M&Ms- the closest I can come to eating my name
