The infamous pageant puzzle had a lot of people thinking the first step was the only step - kind of the opposite of the usual tendency to overcomplicate things.

I finished the grid today; no clue yet on the meta. But I have an excuse. I had open-heart surgery Monday for an aortic aneurysm. I just got out of the cardiac ICU today. I’m feeling much better and on the road to recovery.

It must be the flu, but I'm just not seeing it. When page 1 is done in 20 minutes or less, it's usually pretty straightforward. Oh well. I'll keep at it.
