MGWCC #802 — “Animal Instinct”
MGWCC #802 — Friday, October 13th, 2023 — “Animal Instinct”
Since this one played almost like a Week 2, we’re backtracking this week to a Week 1, complete with Week 1 solving options. I’m especially interested to see if anyone can get this using downs-only + no instructions, so let me know in comments when submitting if you get it that way.
THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:
No instructions given here since there are no-instructions available this week.
Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
–Matt
I’m writing a weekly crossword for Merriam-Webster’s website. It’s a puzzle type called “The Missing Letter” that I created especially for the site: 25 entries in the grid are defined using their M-W dictionary definition, and these each begin with a different letter of the alphabet. The only one not represented each week is “The Missing Letter,” and you can enter to win a $25 gift certificate at their site. Check it out here.

One think about not having a streak to worry about is you can enter pathetic answers like one that obviously fits and *might* be the only thing that does but is just too pathatetic to allow you more than 47% surety.
So submitted. (Actually I'm 82% sure my 47% surety is correct. If the WSJ taught me anything this week it's that math doesn't work)
EDIT: there I am at 61. I wonder if anyone was thrown by the one thing that keeps this from being a hundred percenter and made me need a good five minutes of heavy thinking after seeing the metanism to come up with an answer.

Beamed up, a welcome diversion from the WSJ

PS: If you want help with a meta, PM what you have so I can help without spoiling too much. I've received lots of help in the beginning and I love to pay it forward!

We are always happy to get to know other muggles and help in any way! PM's are always welcome. The next best thing to winning a mug is helping a fellow muggle win a mug!

Waiting for the beam, but pretty sure I got it. Which is good. Cuz I don't know what the hell is going on over at the WSJ.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!
