Ahoy Muggles!
The meta answers are BUTTER and SCOTCH or BUTTERSCOTCH - also known as my 3 favorite flavors!
To solve, puzzlers first needed to notice the 6 clues with asterisks and their symmetrically-located grid entries. Taking the title and central grid entry (SIMILES) into consideration, the next step was to notice that all 6 of these entries could be parts of common similes. The first letters of the simile descriptors spelled B-U-T-T-E-R, and the first letters of the associated clues spelled S-C-O-T-C-H - two items that can also be as "Smooth" as a Millpond.
