Ashore!
I was so close for a long time (correctly thought what I had so far couldn't be a coincidence or red herring) but couldn't see what I was missing, until I revisited one thing I'd ignored... and that was the missing piece that made it all work!

I'm on the beach. Yeah, this feels another one for the "This is how a meta crossword works" guide.

Fell quickly but it was one of those “easy-but-fun” ones.
If you like Rows Gardens check out my mini ones here: viewforum.php?f=41. Nudges are free on the off chance I’ve solved the meta.

Ashore! a beer for olivia and one for myself! please enjoy this poem:
Through stormy skies and crashing waves,
We sailed, bold and brave,
Our ship, Crossword, a sturdy vessel,
Seeking the treasure, a puzzle's wrestle.
With ink-stained maps and quills in hand,
We charted words upon the sand,
From "Arr" to "Yo-ho-ho" we sought,
The hidden gems the puzzle brought.
At last, the island loomed in sight,
Its shores gleaming with crossword light,
With cannons loaded, we made our way,
To conquer the puzzle, come what may.
Each clue deciphered, each word unveiled,
Our victory song, across the island sailed,
From the helm, Captain Crossword cried,
"Pirates of words, we're filled with pride!"
Now we stand, with puzzles conquered,
Our knowledge, honed and nurtured,
In this forum, we raise a cheer,
To crossword lovers, far and near.
So, me hearties, let us toast,
To the puzzles we have engrossed,
May our swords be swift, our words be grand,
As we sail on, in this crossword land!

Figuratively, I'm hanging out with Isaac. Literally, I'm a Buckeye in hostile Wolverine territory. It's not coming to me.

That count may not be accurate. I prefer to solve in AcrossLite and if I don't have any idea about the meta, I don't say anything about my attempts unless the deadline is looming. There may be others like me out there.DrTom wrote: Fri May 12, 2023 12:13 am Six pages of solvers and I only just finished the fill about 20 minutes ago and have no ideas (well that is not true, I had some but they proved to be dead ends. What is even worse is that it appears only three people have even given "Before And After" a try.
I jumped on Before and After shortly after you posted it... solved the grid... and got stuck.
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

Got it! Really good puzzle! Just tricky enough. My first idea from Thursday was correct but I did not take it far enough til now.

Towed to shore by a clever spouse. Nice one - and the grid was pretty sparkly.

Thanks a lot for the nudge, Zoomers! Nothing like an enjoyable "Aha" to kick off the weekend on the beach.

Got it. I solved on paper and hadn't made all the corrections to my first-pass errors until someone on the Zoom call mentioned one of the entries that I still had wrong (very obviously, once I looked at it). Then it wasn't a long trip to the solution.
