Well, I think I’m ashore - submitted the best I could come up with.

Still lost at sea tonight! But maybe I’ll get some idea to get further before midnight…not giving up hope yet!

Good evening muggles. Our final count is 31 on the ship and 114 on the shore.
Have a good week.

I’m ashore thanks to a tow from muggle friends! If I had just had more time prob could have eked this one out.

Crawled through the surf to the sand exhausted and bedraggled.

Once again, my ego is being sCARred by another tricky (for me) meta! Even the rabbit tOLd me it wasn't worth it to rumINAte anymore. In my defense, I haven't spent much time WRacking my brain: with my girlfriends until Saturday, driving home and getting to spENd time with my 18-month-old grandson. They were in town because we had a baby shower to go to--grandbaby #2 will be arriving soon! If inspiration doesn't strike in the next hour, I'll put another tick in the lose column.

Thank you for the nudge, zoomers. Once again my compass just needed some orientation to get ashore.

Just checking in to say I'm still on the ship and looking forward to the reveal. This has possibly been my worst week ever meta-wise, but also a busy week work-wise so I haven't had too much of a chance to dwell :-) I got what I assume was the first step but none of my second steps panned out. Congrats to the smart solvers out there on the beach! *waves*

Saw the answer on the WSJ Site. I would never have gotten this in a million years.
Second miss this year. Boo hoo!

Did not solve correctly. Congrats to those who did. Elegant puzzle.

This puzzle was as elegant as a hernia. Navy also operates navy.com, which threw me off for a day. My least favorite solve in months.

I fell down the "find the/an-other domain with the same TLD" rabbit hole and never crawled back out:
Like (I think it was) HeadinHome, I found three of alternates quickly, while one (.COM) had too many possibilities and the fifth (.MIL) not enough, although I eventually discovered that there is a code.mil domain. But I couldn't make anything out of CCTRU.
Code: Select all
1A NAVY .MIL 72A CODE
5A PETA .ORG 73A CATO
57A SENATE .GOV 49A TSA
62A PINTEREST .COM 37A ROKU
68A BROWN .EDU 15A UTAH

I was convinced I was on my way by finding grid entries with the same url as the theme entries.
peta.org cato.org
senate.gov tsa.gov
pinterest.com roku.com and rado.com
brown.edu utah.edu
then I found.
navy.mil code.mil
But alas could not get any further.
Was then guided to the solution and did not submit.
Spent a lot of time in that rabbit hole.

This was a frustrating one, because I needed a nudge even though the answer was right there. One of my big distractors was that IDS, in the center of the puzzle, could have clued a number of different ways. But it used 'pick out of a LINEup', echoing 'online'. I kept wanting to pick smaller words out of the online address names.
I was seeing the word 'vinyl' when I looked at 'navy.mil' even though it was 'm' not 'n', and then seeing VAINLY as also containing 'vinyl', but the bigger connection never clicked.

I got the answer thanks to the late zoom, but did not like this mechanism. I had the five theme answers and their seperate web extensions. Then I saw “Utah” and knew that Utah.edu is a site. So it tsa.gov and cato.org. Then I found that code.mil is a military website. That left me hunting for the match to .com and I was led to the clue oreo. In order I took the first letter of each match and was left with UTOCC, which if you search the web leads you to this:
https://mierce-miniatures.com/index.php ... ld_102_065
UTOCC is a pony of an anime character, and you can buy the figurine of it.
