Got it with the first two nudges, and an assist from my husband, who guessed the beverage just with the prompt.
Fun puzzle, MikeyG!

I forgot to post that I did finally make sense of the weird noises, thanks to a couple of helpful nudges without which I would not have made it. Thanks, @Dplass!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Solved with nudges. Still looking for the six clues.

Maybe that's an idea for the meta. Example: "The answer to the meta is CHICAGO CUBS. There are 10 clues in the puzzle to the meta. Can you find them all???"

Like dplass, I was headed in a very different direction when I tried the meta last night. Thanks, MikeyG!

Puzzle #38 answer: PUMPKIN SPICE(D) LATTE, or, SCOURGE AGAINST HUMANITY
Correct entries: 40
Simple mechanism that was, in retrospect, a bit too hard to see.
Take the five entries that rhyme with themselves:
HUMDRUM
THINSKIN
NICEPRICE
HOTSPOT
THEYSAY
Take one syllable from each and Mad Gab it up:
DRUM SKIN PRICE SPOT SAY
DRUMSKIN PRICE SPOTSAY
And if you say it enough times after having enough drinks:
PUMPKIN SPICE(D) LATTE!
The Easter eggs were also a bit too hidden, but @KayW found them!
Working on the next meta for October 1, and the answer is not pumpkin-related, I promise.
Until then, may all your favorite drinks be yours! As always, thanks for solving.

Searching "PSL" with absolutely no context does bring up at least one early hit for the famed seasonal drink.
A recent post reminded me to look for the easter eggs on this meta. Do I get extra credit LOL?
11a Pointed, scathing lambasting
33a Places so lofty
52a Picasso's storied land
1d "pretty silly lol"
17d "Peace"-ful Storting location
24d Planned sched. listings
