I'm so certain that I found step 1 that it worries me, because it didn't lead anywhere yet . . .

got it...had to walk away from it for a bit then found a critical missing piece.

I have an answer but I’d really like to run it by someone before submitting. I’m not up on fictional detectives. It checks out on google but I still feel unsure. Is anyone around?

Submitted and presumably beamed. I think what I saw when I googled my solution ranks #2 behind the fella around here with the Wally Gator avatar as the "most random long-dormant synapse triggered in my brain by the meta-world".

Some unfamiliar vocabulary and an unfamiliar detective... still, was able to follow the path without digging any superfluous holes along the way. Beamed up.

Well, it seems that a couple of hits of Troegs Perpetual IPA is what it took - - happily beaming up (to be confirmed, but it's a lock)!

I loved the consistent theme between the fill and meta in spite of the fact that it forced me to Google.

Just enough trickiness to push it past a 2 in my opinion.

Thank all for the offers to consult. I was 90% of the way there, but had missed one item, so had an answer that didn't make sense. While thinking things out after sending thoughts to Joe Ross, I suddently realized my oversight. Haven't submitted yet, but pretty sure I'm beaming up.
