I'm so certain that I found step 1 that it worries me, because it didn't lead anywhere yet . . .

I have an answer but I’d really like to run it by someone before submitting. I’m not up on fictional detectives. It checks out on google but I still feel unsure. Is anyone around?

Or smooth sleuthing?

Beam me up!

Good one, Dean. Not too hard for a Week 3, though I need to google a bit.

I fear that MGWCC is saving the true torture for Weeks 4 and 5.

Beam me up.

How about the constructor’s resume? I think he should add the line “ ....and I also create meta crosswords.”

Submitted and presumably beamed. I think what I saw when I googled my solution ranks #2 behind the fella around here with the Wally Gator avatar as the "most random long-dormant synapse triggered in my brain by the meta-world".

Thanks to all for your offers of help. I am beamed up with a nudge that set me on the right path. I missed a few things and added some others.

Some unfamiliar vocabulary and an unfamiliar detective... still, was able to follow the path without digging any superfluous holes along the way. Beamed up.

Well, it seems that a couple of hits of Troegs Perpetual IPA is what it took - - happily beaming up (to be confirmed, but it's a lock)!

Well I’ve got a string of letters but it’s not a detective (or anything else for that matter.) Must be missing a step.

Is anybody around that I can PM my thought process to? I think I have the solution....but want to confirm I'm not crazy.

Beam me up. A 100% click.

I loved the consistent theme between the fill and meta in spite of the fact that it forced me to Google.

Just enough trickiness to push it past a 2 in my opinion.

Thank all for the offers to consult. I was 90% of the way there, but had missed one item, so had an answer that didn't make sense. While thinking things out after sending thoughts to Joe Ross, I suddently realized my oversight. Haven't submitted yet, but pretty sure I'm beaming up. :)
