This week’s contest answer is a fictional detective.

[Great autobio of Mr. Silverberg on Matt's site.]

I'm beamed up. Seemed relatively easy for a week 3, though I had to Google a bit.

Jumped the gun after getting the first few parts. Streak, I hardly knew ye. Agree that it's not really a 3 except for the probable need for lots of us to google.

I knew what to Google to ID the shamus when I had half the grid filled.

Waiting for a Matt update, but I’m feeling pretty good. Some Google involved...
And confirmed. Molecules are floating through space.

I broke my own rule and submitted before I finished the grid! I was excited that I actually knew of this detective, and I thought that might not be the case for most... Of course there's Google, so I'm still only 39th on the board :-)

Solved. Agree with others that it was easier for me than a typical week 3.

Got it... Off the couch. I was so hoping for Columbo but it was not to be. Fun Friday puzzle. My first Matt Gaffney crossword contest puzzles solved without a nudge.

Beam me up. Definitely on the easy side of week 3, though I suppose 3 of 5 might be easier than 3 of 4 typically. Did feel more like a normal 2. But maybe I just got lucky. :)

Beam me up! I enjoyed the meta but can't say I loved the grid.

Stout fellow has also been spied in the grid. Ditto for a Boston tec support character.
Red herrings? Easter eggs? Coincidences?

Fun puzzle—great job by Dean! Solving this was an obstacle course though. First, the puzzle didn’t arrive until 12:07. Then my internet took a ten minute nap in the middle. Other than that, lol, it was pretty smooth sailing.

Got step one. Need to noodle on that a bit. Gonna get some fresh air and take another look in a while.
