I give props to Cbarbee for putting himself and his puzzle out there for the enjoyment of the forum. Unfortunately, I am staring at 16 empty squares at the bottom center of my grid, even post Google. Tried to find the meta mechanism anyway, and I get the 44A clue, but no dice. Maybe another nudge?

New Spoiler
Think of 44A as 3 syllables. GE-IS-EL, or G is L. Four letter rhyming answer.
