Rock mass in period before start of Lent (7)
Being just about time (6)

MIASMA. Mia’s ma
MINERAL. m (mass) + in + era (period) + l (start of Lent) = rock
MORTAL. moral (just) about (around) t (time) = Being

I liked this non-cryptic one from this past Saturday (7/13) LA Times:
Drink served in 2 states [8 letters]
Answer (ROT-13): VPRJNGRE
I needed a couple of crosses to fill it in, but my kid got it sight unseen.
