Classic Gaffney indeed. A tiny bit odd right at the end, but pretty sure anyway.

I'm surprised I got this, because I'm generally not quick to catch on to the Gaffney metas.

I've got the grid, but I'm still at sea. Actually on the Larkspur ferry passing San Quentin.

Good going! But be careful - the crossword gods punish hubris pitilessly.

Made it to shore early this week.
I wonder what difficulty level Matt shoots for when he constructs for the WSJ. This one felt like a week 2.

On shore. I thought this was a perfect meta, not too easy, not too hard.

Fun puzzle. Worked on it off and on this evening before it came to me. Definitely on shore.

Posting again that I am on shore. Don't know why it didn't work the first time. (Heidi)

I'm guessing that by "last bit" you do not mean the last letter.

After a long period of unavoidable abstention, now back on board - and on shore.

No, not the last letter, just the last piece of the puzzle that I figured out. Being vague to avoid being spoilery.Bird Lives wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2019 10:31 pmI'm guessing that by "last bit" you do not mean the last letter.

The method came to me while riding home from work, and then everything fell into place and I am safely on shore!

Solved. Figured out answer quickly but took me much longer to confirm so no endorphin rush this week.

On shore and enjoying the sand between my toes. This makes three in a row, defying my prediction that I would crash back to earth this week.
I agree with a number of other posters that the grid was a bit harder than usual this week, but the meta flowed naturally and logically once I looked at everything carefully.
