The answer to the metapuzzle is a quantity.

I got it! I’m not allowed to say any meta is easy, so I won’t. I’m not allowed because I really hate it when somebody posts how easy it is and I’m on day 3 of no bunnytails.

I'm wondering when Peter's metas are going to be written up on Crossword Fiend.

Yep. Pretty straightforward this week (at least for me)

I think Meg's right: it's hard to know whether a puzzle is "objectively easy" or if you just happened to notice the key thing early on.

Some fun and interesting things in the grid (e.g., 37D).

BTW, can anyone help me understand 56D?

56D is a reference to Emily Nussbaum, a writer, TV critic, and Pulitzer winner. The bimbo reference is probably from her writing about comedian Michelle Wolf's controversail performance at a White House correspondents' dinner.

Edit: Or a reference to her writing about Trump's calling Megyn Kelly a "bimbo."

Don't know if I'd call 37d "fun" - interesting maybe, if that sort of thing, uh, floats your boat.

Ok I think I'm back in the pgw game

Got it this week. Passed on last week when I saw "French", but I wouldn't have gotten it anyway - didn't recognize any of those dishes.

Fumbled around quite a bit, but the nag that I kept noticing turned out to be the key to the solution.

Yes! Back in the pgw groove. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who was unfamiliar with those dishes in last week's grid. Too bad he didn't put SH*T ON A SHINGLE in the grid. I would've got that immediately!

Yes, I noticed something early on, and it did end up pointing to the mechanism.

Liked it! Struggled with only one area of the grid. Had to google once, then the rest of that part fell into place.

We were commenting on how seldom PGWCC uses the most commonly over-used brief crossword entries. Well, this time, with a grid so big, it may have been too hard not to. A certain old-time baseball great and a certain avant garde artist of long standing both make appearances, in slightly varied from their usual ways.

Tough grid. Thought I might have had the answer but it was kind of soft. Found more to make me believe I don't have it. Glad to have all week to think on it

Grid was tough but doable. Meta - I've got no clue. I really struggle with these.

This is my third week trying one of the PGW crosswords. So far the third one I did not get. I will keep at it.

I find them very different than WSJ or Matt Gaffney's. I have missed one WSJ all year and 2 MGWCC (although I did need a nudge the past 2 weeks). I never would have gotten last weeks because I didn't recognize the foods after the answer was posted.
