"EastEnders" by benchen71

Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? A weekly meta crossword constructed by forum member Ben (aka benchen71). These metas range from relatively easy to more challenging, depending on how many Australianisms he puts in them! Puzzles are posted in a new thread every Tuesday, with nudges appearing on Saturdays, and the solution coming out on Mondays. (At least, that's the plan. Given he lives in Australia, and they are so far ahead of the US time-zone-wise, things may get posted early!)

Welcome to...

benchen71's Metas on a Tuesday (MOAT)

Can you storm the castle by getting across the MOAT? Full confession: I've never watched a single episode of the long-running UK drama "EastEnders". But there is something truly wonderful about the argot of the particular part of London in which this show is set. And so onwards to the puzzle! If you are unfamiliar with Cockney argot, then Google may be of assistance. Hopefully, you find the answer to the meta, which is a noun.

The easiest way to submit is on Crosshare (and you get instant feedback and unlimited attempts!) But you can also PM me with your submission. Either way, I'll compile a list of those who successfully solve the meta.

EastEnders - Crosshare
EastEnders - PUZ
EastEnders - PDF

(As an experiment I am not providing the spreadsheet - comment below if you really want it!)

Nudges are here.
The solution is here.

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

STORMED!

Or as they say in my parts....

STORMED!
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

I stumbled at the bridge and submitted early. I was turned away by the guard but quickly regrouped. MOAT crossed.

I have an answer (and 3 ways to submit it) that works so well, I can’t believe it’s not being accepted. 😡

Edit: got it now. But I stand by my funner answer. ( :

Nudges, in order of increasing blatancy:

1. The 7 asterisked entries are the first word in a Cockney rhyming slang phrase. You might be tempted to jump straight to Google at this point, but there is another mechanism that might make it easier.

2. 7 down clues might stand out from the rest (knowing that the puzzle involves rhyming).

3. 7 down clues rhyme, although it should be noted that one rhyme is a not-all-that-close rhyme, and another only works in Aussie!

4. Once you have the correct pairs of entries (one across, one down), translate from Cockney into regular English.

5. You might just have to use the same mechanism a second time!
