Ahoy, Muggles!
The meta answer is "Easter Eggs" - the "extra" things you may find in some crossword puzzles and around some homes during the Easter holiday. To solve, puzzlers first should've noticed the three "EGG" REBUSes (see 47D) on the "eastern" edge of the grid as indicated by the compass directions at 7D NORTH and 51D SOUTH. The clue for one of those "EGG" entries - "WEST EGG" - contained a subtle hint that was intended to direct your attention to the "western" side of the grid where four "Easter eggs" relating to Easter (1A LAMBS, 17A CANDY, 38A BASKET, and 60A BUNNY) completed the puzzle THEME (28D).
For those who regularly solve meta puzzles this one wasn't very challenging, but hopefully it was fun! For those who may just be getting into crosswords and meta puzzles, hopefully you learned a little bit about rebuses and the other connotation of Easter Eggs. I guarantee you'll see more of both in future "Smooth Sailing Sundays" metas!
@Darth is up next. Please be sure to check out his fantastic meta tomorrow!
Until next time,
Cap'n Rick
