Cruising into the weekend with my toes in the sand. You all made it sound so easy which was not helpful - but it all worked out in the end. ;)

Since I almost never do the puzzle on paper anymore, this was the perfect puzzle for me. For once, it was easier because I do it on my pc (not really, but it did help me make sure I wasn't making any mistakes.)

Martin wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2020 6:25 pm I'm still overthinking. The "singular" in the instructions bothers me because Mike is too good an editor to include an unnecessary word. And the putative 1/2-star solution doesn't need it. Unless there's more than one 1/2-star solution.
It's necessary, but I don't want to say any more, as that might lead to spoilers. Will wait until Monday. I also have a minor issue with the method, but that won't affect most (if any) of the solvers.
If I'm around, I am willing to join the Muggle Zoom room at other times to lend a hand to those in need.

Ashore. I did the grid last night and finished today. I'm pleased that I solved it since I'm sick.

I'm ashore--the weekend looks busy and I didn't want to forget to send in the (how could it not be?) answer. Best wishes to everyone in the bar.

I *think* I'm ashore. If not, I guess it's just a mirage.

Ashore. Decided to submit what I initially came up with. May not be the right one - but time to start the weekend!

BrianMac wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2020 4:15 pm Please check out the new thread entitled Past WSJ Crossword Contests & Solutions, which can be found in the Come Aboard-->FAQ s - Community forum. A work in progress, this thread will contain images of all available past WSJ Crossword Contest puzzles, along with their solutions. The hope is that this will be a valuable resource that will allow those new to meta crosswords to study past mechanisms, as well as for seasoned solvers who may be stuck on a current meta and want to help get some ideas flowing.

Special thanks to Joe Ross, who has undertaken the yeoman's task of compiling and posting these images.
Thanks for sure to Joe; my earliest save was the O-men puzzle.

🙋‍♀️ I’ve come up with the/an answer, but not with my usual degree of confidence. So count me as straddling the fence/barstool, Bob.
