I’ll take just a little more nudge if anyone wants to shoot me one. I see lots of potential rabbit trails that I’m not up to chasing if it’s going to lead no where. It’s an intriguing title!

UPDATE - finally! got there with some private tutoring. One or two of the things I should have noticed do ring a bell, but otherwise I’m not sure I would have had the familiarity to get this without help. Great mechanism though!

Which means, I think some Wednesday nudges are in order:

1. You don't need any town names.

2. The section headings on this Wikipedia page are really fun: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_(word)...

3. What's one way U.S. states famously make a statement about themselves? Each state has one.

4. No two-letter words in this grid, but some nearby short entries are looking awfully close...

OTC with the nudges. I went down the rabbit hole from nudge 1 and needed nudge 2. I probably shouldn't have looked at 3 & 4.
Thanks for the puzzle.

Off the couch, but only with nudge assistance!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Off the couch. Needed google but no nudges.

Nicely done!
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

DUH, made an early error of assumption and followed that assumption to a dead end. The nudges showed me the error of my ways. Off the couch FINALLY!! The puzzle was just ducky!
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

This one has been eluding me all week and I just found my way there. I owe some credit to @woozy's comment about wishing they'd tried harder. Thanks for the puzzle, @schmidzy!

Took until Saturday morning but finally got it. Elegant construction and mechanism of solution.

The contest answer is RHODE ISLAND

Four state mottos appeared in the themers:

EUREKA -- CA
FRIENDSHIP -- TX
INDUSTRY -- UT
FORWARD -- WI

Four three-letter words used these state abbreviations with an added letter (and as it turns out, each was very nearby to its paired themer!):

C(H)A
T(O)X
(P)UT
WI(E)

= HOPE, the state motto of RHODE ISLAND

Thanks to everyone who solved for sticking with what turned out to be quite a tricky puzzle, and thank you for all the kind words! I enjoyed reading many state motto fun facts from all of you in the comments on Crosshare.
