Nudges, in order of increasing blatancy:

1. There are two instructions in the grid, 1A and 69A. Step 1: "WASH clean"; and step 2: "SPIN dry".

2. If you look at the four asterisked grid entries you might notice something that is consistent with all four.

3. 1A could have been clued "___ clean of dirt".

4. SPIN means anagram.

5. If you have derived some likely looking laundry items that don't result in a 4-letter word, try looking in the clues.

Needed the second nudge, even though that's already what I was trying to do. But as soon as I had confirmation that it was definitely the right path, the detail of how to do what I'd been trying to do leapt right out. Crazy how often all you need is to know you're on the path.
