MEOW #166 - Gimme An A!

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

MEOW #166 - Gimme An A!

I had sooo wanted this to be 2 days later so you would solve it, see your shadow then solve it all over again! Alas, my loss is your gain, but if you do want to do it all over again you'll get an A for effort!

I'm going to rate this a:

Kitten
Calico
PERSIAN
Puma
Lion

Because once you see it you'll catch on quick...but seeing it, there's the rub.

Thanks to my testers (it has been so long ago they probably don't remember) @HoldThatThought and @Cap'n Rick

Nudges will be Friday

(thanks also to @Joe Ross who makes this so seamless with his technical expertise)

The cat's out! Fun puzzle, @DrTom!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

I believe the cat is still groaning. He’s seriously considering going back in the bag….

As the cat left the bag I distinctly heard the cry of Oy. Thanks, DrTom.

Cat is out of the bag but doesn't really get the groundhogs day joke.
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

Well it is more of a way to try to tie to GH day (which unfortunately I missed by 2 days) and incidentally a subtle hint at a mechanism.... No I am not going to say what the hint is again!

As an ex-Detroiter I watched in horror as the Lions team that came out for the first half stayed in the locker room until the last 4 minutes of the second half. People can blame the coach for the foregone field goal that would have tied it but what about the missed passes, the bad passes and the ill fated runs up the middle and miscues? Nope the 49ers came to win, and they did unfortunately.
