SOLUTION:
This puzzle had six ten-letter theme entries:
DRAWMEAMAP
ALOTATONCE
OUTONALIMB
GOALONGWAY
ANTSONALOG
HESONAROLL
All were four words, of lengths 1, 2, 3 and 4, though not always in that order.
Of those individual words, only the four-letter word can be divided into quarters, and therefore have a "first quarter." (Looking at the "first quarter" of each four-word entry would simply give you the first letter of each of them, which is obviously not the answer. As some noted, however, if you were to arrange the words in each entry in long to short order, you would get the correct answer.)
The first letters of the six four-letter words spell DOLLAR, something else that can be divided into quarters.
