MGWCC #816 — "Elite Eight"

Dear Solver,

248 of you found the answer to last week's challenge. Read about it here:

It's Week 3 of January but our first two puzzles of the month have played tough so we're going to retreat to a Week 1-level today (with Week-1 solving options) and then come roaring back with a standard Week 4 next week.

No instructions given here since there are no-instructions solving options available.

Good luck!

I took a flier ala Barbara K and Chips Ahoy to be #1. I have a 1 in 8 chance which is better than ever

DUH - I jumped on Eagles then remembered that they lost last weekend.

In at #13. My best showing ever by like 100 at least. Had set an alarm so I'd get it right at 3 (thanks Ada!!!)

I am stoked even if it is a week 1!!!

One team I know is not going to win is our Eagles...ugh

Stay well all

Beamed up at #37. A relief after having an unreasonably difficult time with the WSJ.

On the board at # 30. Grid took a bit to complete, but meta was about as easy as they come.

First time solving downs only, no instructions! But then I had to peek at instructions to make sure I was entering answer in the right form!

Slightly late start, but quick beam. Agree that the grid was tougher than average (for good reason).

First time for downs only, no instructions, submitted without checking anything.

Going to look now, but comments here have me feeling confident.

🤞

Edit: Two names I didn’t know in the grid, but for the meta, I should be beamed up with the next update.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Awaiting the beam... [Actually, it looks like I missed the beam! Perhaps I just missed the update and will catch the next one?]

... and I'm beamed at #158! :D

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Beamed up right after the next to last update. That's always the way. If I get it and submit, I see that the update happened a couple of minutes ago and I have to wait until the next one to find out for sure. I had every confidence in my answer this time and just confirmed. Seemed easy for a Week 3.......

Beamed. Was living large and having fun yesterday, so I'm beginning the WSJCC now. Eleven pages of comments already might mean that it's one of the less difficult ones? I shall soon find out!
