OK, so I did solve this no-instructions, but the "in" was a lucky break...
A little while back, I did another puzzle (I think it might have been a BEQ non-meta) with a similar title and gimmick- answers that ran longer than the grid entry. I noticed a few and got PNOCH, and tried to backsolve to PINOCHLE but couldn't find an L. Finally I got MARTINI and ended up with PNOCHI which was close enough, and fit the title as well.
(edit: actually looking again, i found an L in META-L but couldn't find the E.)
I did look at the instructions before submitting, though, to make sure. And then used the regular file to backsolve the rest.
