MGWCC #799 — “And the Last Shall Be First”

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

Solo solve, one of those rare times when you just “see” it. I’ll be stymied by next week’s Week 1.

But wow, just wow. What a construction.

Unfortunately, next week is a "week 5"! I am definitely expecting to be stymied!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

I actually had a meta in mind (to create) with the same title . . . unfortunately for me, the metanism apparently isn't the same. :-/

Been out west all week, stymied by hours and time zones (MNF at 4???), and apparently that extends to calendars too!

Wow! Waiting for the beam with no doubts.

The grid was a tough one. I rarely have to blind Google, but did here and learned a new word.

Well, I had a blind spot such that I didn't see that my first metanism attempt was the right one. I then followed multiple rabbit holes until a VERY gentle nudge opened my eyes to see....

Got it. Waiting for beam up.
I had asked for a nudge, but before I got a reply, I had an inspiration and found it. Cool.

I just have to take a moment to admire Matt’s sorcerery. I don’t know how he does it. This was super impressive and really entertaining too!

I mentioned that I would comment after the reveal if I remembered. Here it is.

My struggles with completing the southeast corner of the grid led me directly to the mechanism. The X Y and Z jumped right out at me.
