Ashore. So glad to have finally gotten it. No matter that it's at 11:30 pm on Saturday night (and maybe page 9)

I'm ashore. And i will state for the record that I totally and completely hated everything about this puzzle and it made me doubt my sanity and my hope for any future mental development.

Here's a survey to all of the people who were ashore (and may be drinking):
What do you think is the age cutoff at which the elegant element of this puzzle will not be appreciated?

Made it to shore with help from DrTom. I was headed in the right direction but needed to change course. I enjoyed this one!

I’m not really sure what the extra elegance vs regular elegance is. Maybe I got it all at once (or I’m still missing something.)

I found the construction elegant, but googling uninteresting things (4 out of 5) was not so appealing. To get the whole thing without google would require a broad knowledge base in any generation. Mechanism wise, I don’t see any age connection. I’m a boomer fwiw.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Ashore - I had the right idea all along, but mis-read some of the clues, which lead me astray.

I agree with this. Perhaps one solver's elegance is another solver's aggravation.

I’d say Gen X would be it given what the elegance is and how it would be used.

I got the answer without that confirming element. And I was a little nonplussed by the metanism, until I saw the confirming element, that is. Leading me to believe that you found the answer the intended way, whereas I missed the true path and took an unintended short cut.

While nonplussed, at first, it didn't subtract from the puzzle. It just divided us all into two groups (two fractions, you might say). Which adds up to a whole lotta fun. (I guess I tried to get to the root of the matter.)
Ditto!

I've got like 3/5 of an answer -- or maybe 5/5s of a rabbit hole. Can I bounce what I've got so far off someone who can tell if I'm on the right track?

We are also stuck. Been back and forth all weekend. Any nudges in a PM would be welcome (and can explain our potential rabbit holes…)

Ashore. An all-time classic (and I say this as one of those who solved it without knowing _why_ they were doing what they were doing (and I'm early Gen X)). I know now.
