You can drop my name onto the ship party list. Very little time to delve into this one due to our 41st fantasy football draft/golf tournament/party and getting ready to leave town for a week. But I don't think it mattered. I'm just not seeing anything that leads to anything.

Tenuously ashore, but I can defend my answer. As luck would have it, spent a lovely couple of hours on the Mississippi in our community's water taxi, got some close-up looks at the remains of a bridge that was blowed up real good last Sunday. We felt the blast, and we live at least 5 miles from the bridge.

On another note, saw a little dachshund puppy in Walmart tonight, sweet little black and tan, unlike our own dachshund, who I believe was a trained killer. Five years, and we still miss her.

ARRGH! I forgot to submit AGAIN
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

What I like about this is you know the title is "name drop" so you know somewhere names have to be removed. But you get the exact opposite as the names are complete. But no matter what rabbit holes you go down (such as KELLY, NORMAN, ARTHUR, are first names and ... well, I heard of people named Landon... wasn't Lisa Simpson's crush name Landon?... and Gibson, well, I've never met anyone named Gibson but with the tradition of naming people after mothers' maiden names I'm sure someone somewhere has that name) you know you have to drop a name and if you sit and ask yourself "what is being dropped and/or what can I drop" you can come up with it.

.... Of course, having a niggling doubt that "thrice" seems such an odd entry and has an oddly phrased clue doesn't hurt...

I had a momentary hesitation to say I was on "shore" since that was only one letter away from the solution... anyone else?

I had the nickname and was looking at the "dropped" letters (UA, TRICE, RED, ER, ORY), but I was nowhere close to noticing them in the other answers like that. Blech, it stinks when you see the answer and think, "I could have seen that, but I just didn't."

I believe you’re thinking of Langdon Alger. He’s very quiet and enjoys puzzles.

Sounds like someone who’d be into crossword contests.

Landon Donovan was a soccer player, a member of the USMNT. But I could not come up with a Gibson either,

My AHA came when looking one last time and thought AMES in the top right was one letter away from James. That got me thinking about doing something with one letter. Then I saw Josh and nearby USA and was off to the races. But I had stared at it for almost an hour before and saw nothing.
