Triple Up - July 2023

A monthly, music-themed meta crossword published at noon on the first Tuesday of every month. The puzzles increase in difficulty each month, and at year end there is a 13th puzzle (the "Mega-Meta") that invokes each of the 12 monthly puzzles. Currently available at https://pmxwords.com/, as well as through the Washington Post website here: MMMM at WaPo

On the board. I will be interested in finding out what the other plausible answer was.

Just got to this this morning. On the board.

I get the thought that there are two possible answers. But IMO it can only be one of those. I didn't even think people might consider the other until coming here to read the posts.

If anyone is looking for a brainstorming partner on the mega-meta, hit me up privately. I solved the red herring and so my focus is turned to the mega. I see something clearly relevant but am tired of waiting a month at a time for another reveal... would be happy to compare notes and think about where this could be going.

Considering the title, I thought there could be only one plausible answer. However, I'm not showing up on the board!
I see now that there may be another less famous and less plausible answer. Or perhaps the fact that I submitted in all-caps may have delayed acknowledgment. Think I know the Red Herring and on the trail of the Mega Meta.

I only got this with a number of nudges which helped steer me away from copious rabbit holes. Definitely not my favourite of Pete's metas.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

My process on this one:
  • See nothing
  • Try some of the usual things
  • Notice something that seemed very likely to be relevant
  • Find more stuff
  • Misinterpret what it all meant
  • Keep looking and finally see what actually was going on
  • Wonder how to get a musician from that
  • Realize something that still left some ambiguity
  • Have a big aha moment that had me laughing out loud at the cleverness of it all
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Finally figured this one out. Very nice, and I await my featured comment!

This one played rather difficult. I wasn't quite on the right wavelength here, but did eventually catch on.
I agree there are two plausible answers, though one is certainly better.

I've got nothing. Finished the grid and now am just staring.... so will probably just set it aside for now. I didn't end up submitting an answer for last month's meta, but I got very close to solving it, so having zero idea of where to start with this one is frustrating.

Hey everyone! Long-time lurker, first-time poster :D I've been staring at this grid for hours and have fallen down seemingly every rabbit hole without seeing anything, so if anyone could provide me with a nudge to at least steer me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated!

So I did submit what I thought was the more correct answer and I’m on the board. @zuckylee sent you a private message with a hint.

@sharkicicles i'd similarly appreciate a hint, if you're still offering!

I'm going to try BarbaraK's method. So far I've got step 1 down pat, but let me sit here and practice it a little more just to make sure.

Got it! And I agree that there are two seemingly plausible answers here but I'm gonna go with my gut on this one.

Tough grid and now a lot of staring and weird rabbit hole ideas. I'd love it if someone could provide a nudge. Thanks.

First time posting here (and this is my first year attempting the MMMM in real time). I am completely at sea! Can anyway give me gentle push in the right direction? I didn't solve last month's before the deadline and it was so frustrating and disappointing!
