MGWCC #786 — “Set Collection”

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

Made up an entirely different mechanism before I realized what was going on — very fun!

I think I know the answer but it's not a 100%er. It's more of a 3.571428571428571428571428571429%er.

EDIT: I think my guess was right but for a different reason (which really makes it quite a coincidence).... If I guessed right. Not a 100%. More and 93%er. Nothing riding on it but my streak.

EDIT2: Whew! Got it. (not solo). Curious if anyone noticed the alternative way to get the answer that has nothing to do with the metanism? Would be a coincidence if it wasn't intentional.

Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

Confidently submitted. But then I did that with the WSJ puzzle and was incorrect. Last update was 9:45 so I will have a nervous wait.

Edit: Beamed aboard! This seemed like more of a week 2 if you followed the road signs.

No, it didn't!

Well if you put the road signs behind monstrous ferns and throw six feet of mud at them.

.EDIT: I was being facetious but there IS a road sign. But it IS hard to see because it is hidden and behind mud.

Well, I submitted based on a few things I saw but no solid AHA! Hope I have not gone directly to Jail....

Just printed the puzzle and really enjoyed the grid. Based on the comments above and my complete fail on WSJ this week, maybe I should cut my losses and be happy with completing the grid :).....just kidding. of course I'll pound my head against the wall again snd again

Well I was wrong. Checked the update and I do not appear so my informed guess was ill informed. I will now seek the wisdom of those who have solved to tell me what I should have done. Darn I was so close to 25, but you know, it is strangely liberating to be at zero.

Made it with a nudge.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

Not to nit pick as I am still struggling but the term for 47A has not been used in 50 years.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboututc.shtml ... s%20(BIPM).

I was gifted the answer but still don't like it. Two thumbs down.

I do wish that MGWCC had an Xword Rabbit section because I have an interesting (and perfectly logical) one for my swing and a miss. I will try to remember to post my foolishly "brilliant" idea on Tuesday after the reveal.

Beamed up with an assist. I made this way too complicated.

Submitted, awaiting beam.
Got fixated on the wrong things, even if they were kinda the right things!
Nice Aha moment, but there is a loose end I can’t tie up… guess we will see.

EDIT beamed at #138.
Phew.

Beamed up this morning.

Took me awhile to see what was going on. Then I got diverted by not paying attention to the prompt and finding an alternate answer (that doesn't work on multiple levels). Made a course correction and solved.

While the grid was not as torturous as some recent ones, I did find it difficult, and not nearly as fun as Dr. Tom's!

Snuck in non-solo at #145 just before the latest update. Thanks fellow Muggles for the encouragement.
