Award Winner—WSJ hex 5/6/23
Fun puzzle by C&R. I spun my wheels for a minute or two and then it was smooth sailing.

Amazing construction, as usual. Follow every instruction. The payoff is worth it.

Enjoyed this one. Got all but the NE corner quickly. When I figured out the mechanism I got more of it. Then went away for a while and when I came back, I finished after looking up Asian Islands. Still don't quite get the wordplay for 9 down, though I am confident of my entry.

21D - The clue reads "Treat Spooner's finished, for example"
Is that your question, or are you asking about the wordplay that gets you to the grid entry?

I do not understand the second part of the wordplay that leads to the answer.

Thanks. That clears it up and confirms that my entry is correct.

Enjoyed this HEX. After getting just one of the special squares, I figured out what the "award" would be.

Fun puzzle, and I did color and connect the squares.
I know what 14A has to be, but not sure I understand it.

If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.
(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)
