I'm pretty sure I know what the mechanism is but it's just not turning up anything... I'm beginning to wonder if I don't in fact know this movie (I do live under a rock).

FWIW, I would rate the chances that you don't know the movie as very low indeed.

I'm still searching for that MISSING SOMETHING... hoping to find it, or to get nudged out tomorrow. And I wouldn't be surprised if I don't know this movie, either. There are some mind-boggling gaps in my knowledge of pop culture.

I had hoped to solve before the Zoom call tonight, but it's not going to happen. That said, this puzzle is obviously brilliant given the clue for 12D, which has given me some street cred with my kids - thanks, Jay!

Edit: I got it (as a result of joining the Zoom call!)

Eleven more have left their respective couches and joined the solvers list. I’m given to understand that the regular Tuesday Muggles Zoom may have had something to do with this influx.

15. Meg
16. MatthewL
17. CPJohnson
18. rjy
19. LB800
20. Pair O Ducks
21. Cinny
22. Mark Woychick
23. BrennerTJ
24. hcbirker
25. ReB

As for those who have not yet been heard from, maybe a few more nudges will help.
To save you the trouble of scrolling up, here are all the nudges old and new.

There are four thematic elements (actually lines) to the mechanism, symmetrically placed.

Joni Mitchell solved it. She looked at both sides now.

What’s missing from each of the four meta-related words is a letter.

Each missing letter is not far away, and it announces itself clearly

I don’t know about you, but to me that last Across entry looks pretty suspicious . . .

. . . as though one of its words is missing a letter.

When each missing letter is put in its proper place, a new word is formed. Unlike many metas, it is these words themselves — not their first letters, not letters anywhere else in the grid — that lead to the answer.

Made it off the couch. All it took was being knocked over the head by nudges.
Thanks, Jay.

Off the couch! I got into a rabbit hole I couldn’t escape, but was launched by the early nudge.

Thanks, Jay!
