Harper’s, Jan 23 — Diptych
Much year-end variety crypticking fun here. Another devious REMJ contraption with some especially tricky clues.

I haven’t seen it online yet.

Wow! That was a struggle—some of those clues were hard, not to mention the blending of two of them together. The only thing that saved me was noticing something early on.

I believe I noticed the same something early on, as well.
If I had not, I feel I would have spent a week on this one.

That was a fun one. It seems to me that the more unclued entries there are in a particular puzzle the easier the clued ones are. Or maybe I'm -- finally -- getting better at these things.

As always, a very fun puzzle! But I do have a complaint about the questionable answer to 20D on the right side, which messed up my SW quadrant for way too long!

I found this Maltby puzzle to be very challenging when I finally got to it after holiday travel. Some very tough cluing had me solving over a number of sessions, even though I had the diptych connection early. For me, an even more gratifying solve than usual. Happy New Year to all.
