MGWCC #757 - “A League of Their Own”

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

Beamed up, but I had trouble filling in the grid correctly.

Week 1‽

I’m done. Just done.
Barney:

If you need a friendly nudge to get you started, you will find a lot of patient and generous solvers here. It •is• a Week 1 in difficulty, but we've all been there - staring hopelessly at a puzzle that it feels like everyone else solved instantly. That's the curse of the meta solver's life, I'm afraid

There's a trick to this, like there's a trick to every meta, but don't give up too soon - there are helpful resources to call upon here, if you need them. We don't bite, or judge

The grid is very hard.

The meta, if you have the grid, is a week one.... but the grid was very brutal.
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

Awaiting beam-up. Hope I wasn't too quick jumping to a conclusion...

Edit: Nope, I missed the beam-up! Guess I was too quick. Missing a week 1 hurts :?

Second edit: #318!!! Phew, what a relief! Guessing my answer has been accepted as an alternate.

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

unlikely, I beamed up part way through myself (and am on at #74), I finished the grid afterwards, it's a 100%

One to beam up Scotty!

I do understand Barney's frustration because, well everyone who solved knows why. The grid is a challenge and if I had not been doing these for a while I would have been gnashing my teeth as well. But if you HAVE been doing them the light bulb goes on pretty quickly. Still, it does not qualify as "easy" because "easy" is in the eye of the beholder. (and I quite often be holding the poopy end of the stick on those labelled with the dreaded "E" word)

So far it looks like a good week-end, perhaps I'll have time to do something else since both metas are done.

"Mom, I've solved my crosswords, can I do my chores now please?" :)
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

Beamed up. Never a doubt! Well, there actually was one nagging thought about a second answer, but I could find nothing to support it.

I see where there can be two answers that are acceptable. Depends on where you grew up, I guess.

Beamed this morning. Took a bit to get a handhold on the grid, but I do enjoy these a lot. Reminds me of many Thursday WSJ puzzles.

Awaiting beam up. Seems like a major league puzzle for a minor league week 1.
That was fun!

Appreciate the push, shove, and support team here

Against my best donkey braying I did eventually figure this out

Can’t say it was exactly a pleasant experience.

Like Lisa Simpson said decades ago, “How can something suck and blow at the same time?”

How can a puzzle be so hard and easy at the same time?

I salute anyone who just ran with the answer solely from the title.

Hmm.... for support and comforting words

I just realized I did the grid wrong and submitted an answer that should have been wrong but was accepted. So I think they are accepting alternative answer.

I imagine there will be some discussion about the varieties of a particular sport come tuesday.

I beamed up. Interesting that there seem to be 8 wrong answers. I wasn't online when this came out. Did anyone notice, were they all right at the start from people guessing before solving? Or some of the alternate answers I see people discussing?
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Are you sure? Matt hasn't updated the leaderboard since 8:39 this morning.

You were correct.

So was I. This puzzle could have been solved simply from the title!
