My suggestion would be to begin solving the normal looking clues and see what develops for you.

Fortunately someone left a nice fat juicy hint in the WSJ comments. I would not have fathomed that by myself.

Now the whole thing is solved except 6A.

The beginning of the instructions “Twelve unclued words…” seemed rather daunting to me. Then on my first pass through, I only got 7D. So put it aside til after the weekend. Yesterday and today, I was finally in the right mindset to interpret more of cryptic clues. Then it’s like a boulder rolling downhill, picking up speed, going faster and faster. Then POOF! It’s done! Very enjoyable!

Cryptics don’t come naturally to me, but I enjoy the effort and getting the solve!
