Who reminds us that Abigail Adams didn't need flowers and candy from John for Valentine's Day but would have been perfectly happy with a supply of pins.

The six nicknames of presidents (which you might use if you were on familiar terms with them) were the only entries with a number in their clues. However, as Schmeel put it, those numbers "are not the clue to the answer, only to the method."
JAMES was purposely clued as someone other than a president, but, thanks to DrToms' suggestion, also provided with the "someone to count on" hint, a necessary addition for solving.
I was hoping the answer, as you went down the grid picking out the letters, would be a bit of a surprise. Firstly, by turning out to be unrelated to A - B - ??! Lincoln, and secondly, by being a founding mother rather than father.
And our friend "Chad" needed to help out since James, while it is the most common presidential name, was/is the name of only six of them.
Many of you shared in your PMs other historical tidbits, including of course, it being important to "Remember the Ladies!"

Another anecdote relating to Abigail's letters -- this time to son John Quincy when he was away at school and she had heard through the grapevine that he was, like many teens can be, getting a little too big for his breeches!
